Free Word and Character Counter

This counter reports words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines and the real UTF‑8 size of your text. Counts refresh as you type, so you can write straight into the box and watch a limit rather than pasting back and forth.

What Counts as a Word

Separated by whitespacethe quick brown foxFour words. Spaces, tabs and line breaks all separate words.
Punctuation stays attachedend. One word, the same way a word processor counts it.
Hyphens and apostropheswell-knownOne word, not two.
Numbers count1,299 unitsTwo words. Numerals are treated like any other token.
Chinese and Japanese今日は良い天気Each character counts as one word, as those scripts have no spaces.

Characters, Code Points and Bytes

Most counters report Unicode code points, which is the big character number above. The precise panel also shows visible characters, where an emoji built from several code points counts once, and UTF‑16 code units, which is what many form fields and database columns actually limit. The UTF‑8 size is the file size you would get by saving the text.

Using a Limit

Choose a preset for a title tag, meta description, social post or SMS, or set your own in characters or words. The meter turns amber near the limit and red once you pass it, and always shows the amount you have left.

Why Counters Disagree

Different tools define a sentence, a word and a character differently. Sentence detection here ignores common abbreviations such as Mr. and e.g. and decimals such as 3.5, which are the usual reason a sentence count comes out too high elsewhere.
