What each mode does
Pick the mode that matches what you need the text for. "Keep line breaks" changes the first two modes so they work one line at a time, which is handy for lists.
| Mode | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Remove all | 1Z 999 AA1 0123 4567 | 1Z999AA101234567 |
| Remove all + keep line breaks | (540) 555 0199 540 555 0123 | (540)5550199 5405550123 |
| Collapse to one space | Hello world, how are you? | Hello world, how are you? |
| Collapse + keep line breaks | Hello world, how are you? | Hello world, how are you? |
| Trim lines | indented line tabbed line | indented line tabbed line |
What counts as whitespace
Regular spaces, tabs and line breaks are the obvious ones. Text copied from websites, PDFs and Word often also carries characters you can't see: non-breaking spaces, thin and em spaces, ideographic spaces, and invisible characters like zero-width spaces and byte order marks. These are the usual reason two strings that look identical don't match, or a "clean" value still fails validation.
This tool finds all of them and counts each kind, so you can see what was hiding in your text. Switch to "Show changes" to see every one marked in place before you copy the result.
Questions
Will this remove spaces between words?
In "Remove all" mode, yes. That's the point of that mode, and it's meant for codes, IDs, phone numbers, tracking numbers, keys and other values where spaces don't belong. If you just want to tidy messy spacing in normal writing, use "Collapse to one space" instead, which keeps a single space between words.
What does "Remove invisible characters" remove?
Zero-width spaces, word joiners, byte order marks, the Mongolian vowel separator and soft hyphens. It leaves zero-width joiners alone, because emoji and some scripts need them to display correctly.
Can I use a Word document?
Yes. Open or drop a .docx file and its text is read in your browser, with each paragraph on its own line. The result downloads as a plain .txt file. If you want to fix spacing inside a Word document and keep its formatting, the Extra Space Checker edits the .docx directly.
Does it keep Windows line endings?
Yes. If your file uses Windows line endings (CRLF), the download keeps them. Each CRLF pair counts as one line break in the stats.
Is there a size limit?
Files up to 50 MB work, though very large text can take a moment. For inputs over about 300,000 characters, "Show changes" is turned off to keep the page responsive. The result, Copy and Download still include everything.
