Lists, columns and separators
Paste a list or upload a text file to sort it.
How to Use the Text Sorter
- Add your text. Paste a list into the Your text box, or upload or drag in a .txt, .csv or .log file.
- Pick a sort method. Choose Alphabetical, Natural, Numeric, Length, Word count, Reverse or Shuffle, then set it to Ascending or Descending.
- Clean it up. Turn on the options you need: ignore case, trim spaces, remove blank lines, remove duplicates, or ignore a leading “The,” “A” or “An.”
- Sort lists and columns. For comma-separated lists, or to sort lines by a specific word or column, open Lists, columns and separators.
- Copy or download. The result updates as you type. Copy it, save it as a .txt file, or click Use as input to sort it again another way.
Everything runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded to a server.
Text Sorter FAQ
How do I alphabetize a list?
Paste your list with one item per line, then choose Alphabetical. Pick Ascending for A to Z or Descending for Z to A. The sorted list appears instantly in the right-hand box, ready to copy or download.
What’s the difference between alphabetical and natural sort?
Alphabetical sorting compares text one character at a time, so “Item 10” lands before “Item 2” because “1” comes before “2.” Natural sorting reads the numbers inside text as whole values, so you get Item 1, Item 2, Item 10. Use natural sort for file names, chapter lists, version numbers and anything else with numbers mixed into words.
How does numeric sorting work?
Numeric finds the first number in each line and sorts by its value, from low to high or high to low. It understands negatives, decimals and thousands separators, so “1,250.5” is read as 1250.5. Lines without a number are moved to the end, in alphabetical order.
Can I sort by line length or word count?
Yes. Length sorts by the number of characters in each line, and Word count sorts by the number of words. Both work shortest-first or longest-first. Lines of the same length or word count are ordered alphabetically, so the results stay predictable.
Can I alphabetize a comma-separated list?
Yes. Open Lists, columns and separators and set Items are separated by to Commas. The tool splits the list, sorts each item and joins them back with commas. You can also split on semicolons, tabs, pipes, spaces or a custom separator. To turn a comma list into one item per line, set Output as to One item per line.
Can I sort lines by a specific column or word?
Yes. Under Lists, columns and separators, set Sort by to A column, enter the column number and choose how columns are separated. For example, to sort “Jane Smith” and “Tom Adams” by last name, sort by column 2 split by spaces. This also works for simple CSV and tab-separated data. The whole line is kept intact; only the chosen column decides the order.
What’s the difference between Z–A and Reverse?
Alphabetical, Descending sorts your lines from Z to A. Reverse doesn’t sort at all. It flips your lines exactly as they are, so the last line becomes the first. Reverse is handy for logs, timelines and lists already in order that you want upside down.
Is the sort case-sensitive?
Ignore case is on by default, so “Apple” and “apple” are treated as the same word. Turn it off to separate them. Uppercase then comes before lowercase when two words are otherwise identical, while the letters stay in normal dictionary order. Ignore case also controls whether “Apple” and “apple” count as duplicates.
How do I remove duplicate lines while sorting?
Turn on Remove duplicates. The tool keeps the first copy of each line and removes the rest before sorting, then shows how many it removed. If you only need to remove duplicates without changing the order, use our duplicate line remover.
What does “Ignore The, A, An” do?
It sorts titles the way libraries and music stores do. With this option on, “The Beatles” is filed under B and “A Tale of Two Cities” under T. The words stay in your output; they’re just skipped when deciding the order.
What happens to blank lines and extra spaces?
Remove blank lines deletes empty lines and lines that contain only spaces. Trim spaces removes leading and trailing spaces from each line in the output. Both are on by default. Extra spaces never affect the sort order, so an indented line sorts the same as one without indentation.
Is the shuffle truly random?
Yes. The shuffle uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator with the Fisher–Yates method, so every possible order is equally likely. Click Shuffle again for a new order. It works well for randomizing quiz questions, raffle entries, playlists and team lists.
Does it work with accented letters and other languages?
Yes. Sorting follows your browser’s language rules, so accented letters like é and ñ sort next to their plain versions instead of being pushed to the end of the list.
How much text can it handle?
You can upload plain text files up to 25 MB. Lists with tens of thousands of lines sort almost instantly on most devices. Very large inputs may take a moment longer on older phones.
Is my data safe?
Yes. The text sorter runs entirely in your browser. Your text and files are never uploaded, stored or shared, and the tool keeps working even if you go offline after the page loads.
