How to remove extra spaces from text
Paste your text into the left box, or drop in a TXT or Word file. The checker fixes spacing problems as you type, and the right side shows exactly what changed: removed spaces in red, added spaces in green, with invisible characters made visible. Switch to Clean text to see the finished version, then copy it or download it.
Each type of fix has its own toggle with a count of how many it found, so you can turn off anything you want to keep.
What it fixes
- Double spaces between words, including runs of three or more
- Spaces after periods, set to one or two, or left alone
- Trailing spaces at the end of lines, which are invisible but break diffs and code
- Spaces before punctuation, like
word ,ordone . - Spaces inside brackets, like
( this ) - Odd spaces such as non-breaking, thin and em spaces that copy in from PDFs, Word and web pages
- Invisible characters like zero-width spaces, stray byte order marks and soft hyphens
- Extra blank lines, collapsing three or more line breaks into one empty line
- Indents and tabs, if you turn those options on
Code in backticks, such as `like this` or fenced code blocks, is left untouched by default.
Cleaning Word documents
Drop a .docx file in and you get a .docx file back, not just plain text. The checker edits the text inside the document directly, so bold, italics, fonts, headings, tables, images, headers and footers all stay exactly as they were. Only the spacing changes.
One space or two after a period?
Modern style guides, including APA, MLA and the Chicago Manual of Style, all call for one space after a period. Two spaces is a habit from typewriters, where every letter was the same width. Some legal offices and individual instructors still prefer two. With 2 spaces selected, the checker skips common abbreviations like Mr., Dr., U.S. and e.g., and initials like J. R. R., so names don't get split up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find double spaces in Word?
In Word, open Find and Replace, search for two spaces and replace with one, then repeat until nothing is found. That misses non-breaking spaces, spaces before punctuation and invisible characters. Dropping the file in here catches all of them at once and keeps your formatting.
Why are there weird spaces in text I copied from a PDF?
PDFs position text with layout spacing, so copying often brings along double spaces, non-breaking spaces and line breaks in odd places. The Odd spaces and Invisible characters fixes are made for that.
Will it change my paragraph breaks?
Single line breaks and normal blank lines are kept. Only runs of three or more line breaks are reduced, and you can turn that off.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The checker runs in your browser, including Word files, which are opened and rebuilt on your device.
