How to find duplicate words in your text
Paste your writing into the left box, or drop in a TXT or Word file. Results update as you type. Doubled words like the the are marked in red, which is the classic typo spell checkers often miss. Words you reuse within a short stretch are underlined in amber, and clicking any word highlights every place it appears.
Use Fix doubled words to remove every accidental double at once. Pairs that are sometimes correct, like had had or that that, are marked in a lighter color and left for you to decide.
Three kinds of repetition
Doubled words are the same word typed twice in a row, often across a line break where they're hard to spot. They're almost always typos.
Close repeats are the same word used again within a few sentences, like using important three times in one paragraph. They make writing feel clumsy, and editors call them echoes. Adjust the range to catch repeats within 10, 25, 50 or 100 words.
Repeated phrases are groups of two to six words that appear more than once, like in order to or at the end of the day. The phrases tab finds them and shows the longest version, so you don't get a dozen overlapping fragments.
Overused words
The Repeated words tab lists every word that appears more than once, sorted by how often you use it. Common words like the and and are skipped by default so the list shows the words that actually stand out. Download the list as a CSV to check keyword usage in an article, or to compare drafts.
Frequently asked questions
Why didn't my spell checker catch the doubled word?
Each word is spelled correctly, so many spell checkers let it through, especially when the two copies sit on different lines. This tool looks at word pairs instead of single words.
Is "had had" a mistake?
Not always. "She had had enough" is correct English, and so is "I know that that is true." The tool flags these in a lighter color and doesn't remove them when you click Fix doubled words.
Does it work with Word documents?
Yes. Drop a .docx file in and its text is read in your browser. To fix doubled words in the document itself, make the changes in Word using the highlights as a guide, or copy the fixed text from here.
Is my text uploaded?
No. All analysis happens in your browser, and your text never leaves your device.
