Sentence case
The corrected text appears here as you type.

Paste any text and the first letter of every sentence is capitalized as you type. Sentence case mode also fixes text typed in ALL CAPS or with random capitals, while keeping acronyms like NASA and brand names like iPhone as they are. It capitalizes "I", days, and months, doesn't treat abbreviations like "e.g." as the end of a sentence, and highlights every letter it changed so you can check the result. Everything runs in your browser.

How to capitalize the first letter of each sentence

  1. Paste your text into the left pane, or open a .txt file.
  2. The corrected text appears on the right right away, with each changed letter highlighted.
  3. Pick a mode. Sentence case rewrites everything in normal sentence capitalization. Only capitalize sentence starts fixes the first letters and leaves every other letter exactly as you typed it.
  4. Add names or words the tool should always spell a certain way, like your company or town, under Always write as.
  5. Click Copy or Download.

How sentences are detected

A new sentence starts after a period, question mark, or exclamation point followed by a space, and at the start of each line if that option is on. Quotes and brackets are handled, so He said. "yes becomes He said. "Yes. A period inside a number like 3.5, a web address like example.com, or an email address doesn't start a new sentence, and web addresses and emails are never recapitalized.

Common abbreviations like e.g., i.e., etc., vs., and approx. don't end a sentence, so the word after them stays lowercase. After titles like Mr., Mrs., Dr., and Prof., the next word is treated as a name and capitalized.

What sentence case keeps

  • Acronyms: words written in all capitals in otherwise normal text, like NASA, FBI, or PDF, are kept. If the whole text is in capitals, common acronyms like USA, CEO, and FAQ are still recognized.
  • Brand names: words with capitals in the middle, like iPhone, eBay, McDonald's, and JavaScript, are kept as typed.
  • Your own list: any word in Always write as is spelled exactly the way you entered it, everywhere it appears.
  • "I", days, and months: capitalized automatically, including contractions like I'm and I'll.

Other proper nouns, like people's names and places, can't be detected reliably when the original text is all lowercase or all capitals. Add them to Always write as, or switch to Only capitalize sentence starts if they're already capitalized correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What is sentence case?

Sentence case is the normal way sentences are written in English: the first letter of each sentence is capitalized, along with proper nouns and the word I, and everything else is lowercase. It's different from title case, where most words in a heading are capitalized.

How do I fix text that was typed with caps lock on?

Paste it here with the mode set to Sentence case. Everything is lowercased except sentence starts, I, days, months, common acronyms, and words in your Always write as list.

Will it change words I capitalized on purpose?

In Only capitalize sentence starts mode, never. Only the first letter of each sentence can change. In Sentence case mode, acronyms and brand names with mixed capitals are kept, and you can protect any other word with Always write as.

Does it work with bullet points and numbered lists?

Yes. With Capitalize each new line on, the first word after a bullet like - or *, or a number like 1., is capitalized on every line.

Can I see what was changed?

Yes. With Highlight changes on, every letter that was changed is highlighted in the output, and the count of changed letters is shown under the panes. Copying or downloading gives you plain text without the highlights.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The text is processed by JavaScript in your browser and never sent to a server.
