PDF Dolphin

Turn a .docx into a PDF right in your browser. The converter lays your document out into real pages with its fonts, headers, footers, lists, tables, and images, then your browser saves a PDF with selectable, searchable text. Nothing is uploaded.

How to convert Word to PDF

  1. Drop your .docx file into the box above, or choose it from your computer.
  2. Check the preview. It shows every page the way it will appear in the PDF, including headers, footers, and page numbers.
  3. Change the page size if you need to, for example to switch a US Letter document to A4.
  4. Select Save as PDF, set the print destination to Save as PDF, and save the file.

Why the PDF is saved through your browser

Most browser-based converters take a screenshot of each page and wrap the images in a PDF. The result looks right, but the text can’t be selected, searched, or read by a screen reader, and the file is large.

This converter builds the pages first and then hands them to your browser’s built-in PDF engine, the same one used when you print a web page to PDF. The PDF keeps real text in the document’s fonts, links stay clickable, and the file stays small. The only extra step is choosing Save as PDF in the print dialog.

What carries over from your document

The converter reads the document’s own styles and page setup, so headings, fonts, sizes, colors, bold and italic text, highlighting, alignment, indentation, and line and paragraph spacing come through as you set them in Word. Bulleted and numbered lists keep their numbering, including multilevel lists like 1.1 and 1.2.

Tables keep their column widths, borders, shading, merged cells, and table styles, and long tables split across pages with their header row repeated. Images, text boxes, tab stops with dot leaders, hyperlinks, footnotes, endnotes, page breaks, and section breaks with different page sizes or orientations are supported too. Headers and footers appear on every page, with page numbers and “Page X of Y” filled in.

What might look different

Fonts are the most common difference. If your document uses a font that isn’t installed on your device, a similar font is used instead. Calibri and Cambria are replaced with metric-compatible fonts, so line and page breaks stay close to the original. Page breaks can still shift by a line or two compared with Word.

Charts, SmartArt, and equations aren’t drawn in full. Charts and SmartArt appear as labeled placeholders, and equations appear as plain text. Multi-column layouts are shown as a single column, and some older image formats, like EMF, can’t be displayed in a browser. The converter lists anything like this above the preview. For documents that depend on these features, use Save As PDF in Word or Download as PDF in Google Docs.

Converting older .doc files

The older .doc format, used before Word 2007, is a binary format that browsers can’t read. Open the file in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, and then convert it here.

Frequently asked questions

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. The document is read and laid out by your browser on your device, and the PDF is written by your browser too. Nothing is sent to a server, so it’s safe to use for contracts, resumes, and other private files.

Will the text in the PDF be selectable and searchable?

Yes. Because your browser writes the PDF, the text is real text in the document’s fonts, not a picture of the page. You can search it, copy from it, and screen readers can read it. Hyperlinks stay clickable.

Why does it open a print dialog?

The print dialog is how browsers write PDFs. Choose Save as PDF as the destination instead of a printer. In Chrome and Edge, it’s under Destination. In Firefox, it’s Save to PDF. In Safari on a Mac, open the PDF menu at the bottom of the dialog and choose Save as PDF.

Can I convert Word to PDF on my phone?

Yes. Choose your .docx file, then tap Open print view. On iPhone and iPad, use the share button on the print screen to save the PDF to Files. On Android, choose Save as PDF as the printer.

Why do some pages break in different places than in Word?

Page breaks depend on exact font measurements. If a font in your document isn’t installed on your device, the replacement can be slightly wider or narrower, which moves line and page breaks. Installing the document’s fonts, or converting on the computer where the document was written, gives the closest match.

Can it convert password-protected documents?

No. A password-protected .docx is encrypted, and it has to be opened with the password first. Remove the password in Word under File, Info, Protect Document, save the file, and convert it.

Does it work with Google Docs and Pages files?

Yes, once they’re saved as .docx. In Google Docs, choose File, Download, Microsoft Word (.docx). In Pages, choose File, Export To, Word.
