Frequently Asked Questions
How is the reading time calculated?
The tool counts all the words in your PDF's text layer and divides by a words-per-minute (WPM) rate. The average adult reads roughly 238 words per minute for non-fiction material. We show three estimates: slow (150 wpm), average (238 wpm), and fast (400 wpm).
Does this work on scanned PDFs?
Only if the scan was processed with OCR (optical character recognition) first. Scanned image-only PDFs have no text layer for the tool to read. If your PDF was scanned without OCR, try our OCR PDF tool first.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Your file is processed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded to any server, and your document stays completely private.
Can I adjust the reading speed?
Yes. Use the WPM slider to set any reading speed between 50 and 1,000 words per minute. The estimates update instantly.
Why doesn't it count words in images or charts?
The tool reads the text layer of the PDF — the same text you can select and copy in a PDF reader. Words embedded in images, charts, or scanned content are not counted because they aren't stored as text.
What's a normal reading time for common document types?
- 1-page memo → ~1–2 minutes
- 10-page report → ~8–12 minutes
- Academic paper (8,000 words) → ~34 minutes at average speed
- Full ebook (50,000 words) → ~3.5 hours at average speed
Is there a file size limit?
There's no enforced limit — the tool processes files of any size. Very large PDFs (100+ MB) may take a few seconds longer to process.
