Frequently Asked Questions
What is IP geolocation?
IP geolocation is the process of mapping an IP address to a real-world location. Because IP addresses are assigned to internet service providers in specific geographic regions, it's possible to determine the approximate country, region, and city associated with any IP address. The accuracy varies — country-level results are nearly always correct, while city-level results can be off by tens of miles in some cases.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
IP geolocation is highly accurate at the country level (95–99%) and reasonably accurate at the region/state level (~80%). City-level accuracy is lower — typically 50–80% depending on how the ISP assigns IPs in that area. If the IP belongs to a VPN, proxy, or Tor exit node, the location shown will reflect where those servers are, not the user's physical location.
Can I look up my own IP address location?
Yes. Just leave the input field blank and click "Look Up Location." The tool will automatically detect your current public IP address and display its geolocation details. This is useful for verifying your VPN's exit location or checking how websites see your location.
What information does the tool return?
Each lookup returns: IP address, country, region/state, city, ZIP/postal code, latitude and longitude, ISP name, organization, ASN (autonomous system number), and timezone. Not every field is available for every IP address — some private ranges or newer assignments may have partial data.
Can I look up private IP addresses like 192.168.x.x?
Private IP address ranges (10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x–172.31.x.x, 192.168.x.x) are reserved for local networks and do not have geolocation data. If you enter a private IP, the tool will let you know it's a reserved address and cannot be geolocated. Only public IP addresses can be mapped to a physical location.
What is an ASN?
An ASN (Autonomous System Number) is a unique number assigned to a group of IP networks managed by a single organization — usually an internet service provider, corporation, or university. Knowing the ASN can help you identify the network that controls a given IP range.
Does the tool support IPv6?
Yes. The tool supports full IPv6 address lookups in both expanded and compressed notation (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334 or 2001:db8::1). IPv6 geolocation coverage is still maturing but country and ISP data is typically available for most global IPv6 ranges.
Can I use this tool to track someone's exact home address?
No — and this is by design. IP geolocation returns the approximate location of the ISP's infrastructure assigned to that IP, not a physical street address. To protect privacy, this tool intentionally does not provide exact street-level data, and no such data is available through standard geolocation APIs.
