How to Convert SVG to ICO

  1. Upload your SVG file — drag and drop it onto the tool or click to browse. Any valid SVG file works.
  2. Choose your icon sizes — select the pixel dimensions to include in the ICO file. For most favicons, 16×16, 32×32, and 48×48 cover all browsers and OS taskbars.
  3. Click "Convert to ICO" — the tool renders each size using an HTML5 Canvas and packages them into a single ICO file.
  4. Download your ICO file — click the download button. The file is created entirely in your browser and never sent to any server.

Why Use Flipper File to Convert SVG to ICO?

  • Works 100% in your browser — your SVG file is never uploaded to a server. All rendering happens locally with Canvas.
  • Multi-size ICO output — choose exactly which icon sizes to include. Browsers, Windows, and macOS all look for different sizes, so bundling several in one file gives you full coverage.
  • No login, no limits, no watermarks — convert as many SVGs as you need, completely free, no account required.
  • Preserves SVG transparency — the ICO file retains alpha-channel transparency, so your icon looks clean on any background color.
  • Instant preview — see a live preview of each selected size before you download.
  • Works on all devices — fully mobile-responsive, so you can generate favicons even from a phone or tablet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ICO file?

An ICO file is a special image format used for icons — most commonly website favicons and Windows desktop/application icons. Unlike a regular PNG or JPG, a single ICO file can contain multiple resolutions of the same image in one file, letting browsers and operating systems pick the best size for each context.

Can I use an SVG directly as a favicon instead of ICO?

Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) do support <link rel="icon" href="favicon.svg">, but Internet Explorer and some older systems require a .ico file. For maximum compatibility — especially the classic favicon.ico placed in the root of your site — generating an ICO file is still recommended.

What sizes should I include in my ICO file?

For a standard website favicon, include 16×16, 32×32, and 48×48 at minimum. If you also want the icon to appear in Windows taskbars and "pin to desktop" scenarios, add 64×64 and 256×256. The 128×128 size is useful for macOS pinned-tab icons.

Does my SVG need to be a perfect square?

No — the converter will fit your SVG into each square icon size. Non-square SVGs will be centered with transparent padding. For best results, use an SVG designed to look good in a square crop.

Are there any file size limits?

No. Because the conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API, there are no server-side file size restrictions. Very large or complex SVGs may take a moment to render at higher resolutions.

Will the ICO file preserve transparency?

Yes. The tool renders each size to an RGBA canvas, so transparent areas in your SVG remain transparent in the ICO output.

Is this tool completely free?

Yes — Flipper File's SVG to ICO converter is permanently free. No login, no trial, no watermarks on your output file.

Why can't I just rename a PNG to .ico?

A renamed PNG is not a valid ICO file. The ICO format has a specific binary structure with embedded image headers for each size. Simply changing the file extension will cause browsers and operating systems to reject or mis-display the icon.
