Drop one or more PNG files and this tool shows everything hidden inside them, then gives you clean copies with that metadata removed. It finds AI image prompts and generation settings from Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI, NovelAI, and others; camera details and GPS location in EXIF; Photoshop and XMP editing history; C2PA Content Credentials; text comments; timestamps; and data tucked after the end of the file. The image data itself is copied byte for byte, so quality, transparency, 16-bit color, and animation are untouched. Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded.
How to remove metadata from a PNG
- Drop your PNG files on the left pane, or click Add PNG files. You can add many at once, or paste a copied file.
- Click a file to see the metadata it contains. Fields marked Private, such as GPS location, author names, and serial numbers, are the ones most worth removing.
- Decide whether to keep the color profile and DPI. Both are kept by default because they affect how the image looks and prints, not who made it.
- Click Download clean PNG, or Download all (ZIP) for several files.
What gets removed and what stays
| Data in the PNG | Chunk | Result |
|---|---|---|
| AI prompts, seeds, models, and ComfyUI workflows | tEXt, zTXt, iTXt | Removed |
| Camera make and model, dates, GPS location, serial numbers | eXIf, or ImageMagick's Raw profile type exif | Removed |
| Photoshop and Lightroom history, creator, document IDs | XMP in iTXt | Removed |
| Content Credentials from AI and editing apps | caBX (C2PA) | Removed |
| Author, comment, software, copyright text | tEXt, iTXt | Removed |
| Last-modified time | tIME | Removed |
| App-specific and unknown private chunks, data after the end of the file | iDOT, prVW, others | Removed |
| Color profile, gamma, and HDR settings | iCCP, sRGB, gAMA, cHRM, cICP | Kept unless you turn it off |
| Print resolution (DPI) | pHYs | Kept unless you turn it off |
| Pixels, palette, transparency, animation frames | IDAT, PLTE, tRNS, APNG chunks | Always kept, unchanged |
Why this is better than re-saving the image
Many metadata removers draw the PNG onto a canvas and export a new one. That does remove metadata, but it also decodes and re-compresses every pixel. The result is often a larger file, 16-bit images are reduced to 8-bit, palette images become full RGB, animated PNGs lose every frame but the first, and dropping the color profile can shift colors.
A PNG is a sequence of labeled blocks called chunks. This tool reads the chunk list, keeps the ones that make up the picture, and leaves out the rest. Because the compressed image data is copied exactly, the cleaned file is always the same size or smaller, and it decodes to identical pixels. Each chunk's checksum is also verified, so you'll be told if a file was already damaged.
What metadata can a PNG contain?
PNG files from phones and cameras can carry EXIF data with the device model and the exact GPS coordinates where a photo was taken. Screenshots and exports from design apps often record the software, version, and creation time. Images from Stable Diffusion interfaces such as Automatic1111, Forge, and ComfyUI store the full prompt, negative prompt, seed, model name, and sometimes the entire workflow, which anyone can read and reuse. Images made or edited with tools that support Content Credentials carry a signed C2PA record of how they were created.
Some websites strip this data when you upload, but many don't, including most file-sharing services, email attachments, chat apps that send files as documents, and your own website's media library.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing metadata reduce image quality?
No. The image data is copied without being decoded or compressed again, so every pixel stays exactly the same. Only the metadata chunks are left out, which usually makes the file a little smaller.
How do I remove a Stable Diffusion prompt from a PNG?
Drop the image here. The prompt, negative prompt, seed, and settings appear under AI generation data, and the downloaded copy no longer contains them. This works for Automatic1111, Forge, ComfyUI prompts and workflows, InvokeAI, and NovelAI images.
Can a PNG contain GPS location?
Yes. PNG files can store EXIF data, including GPS coordinates, in an eXIf chunk, and some apps store it as text instead. Both are detected and removed. Location fields are marked Private so they're easy to spot.
Should I keep the color profile?
Usually, yes. A color profile or gamma setting tells apps how to display the colors and doesn't identify you. Removing it can make the image look slightly duller or brighter in some apps. Turn it off only if you want the smallest possible file.
Does it work with animated PNGs?
Yes. Animation frames and timing are kept exactly as they were, and only metadata is removed.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Your files are never sent to a server.
