Validates as you type

YAML is easy to write but notoriously unforgiving — one wrong indentation or a misplaced colon and your config won't parse. The FlipperFile YAML Validator checks your YAML instantly, pinpoints the exact line causing the error, and shows you a clean, formatted preview when it's valid. No account, no upload, no waiting.

How to Validate Your YAML

  1. Paste your YAML into the input box on the left (or upload a .yaml / .yml file).
  2. The validator runs automatically as you type — no button required.
  3. If there's an error, you'll see the exact line number and a plain-English explanation.
  4. If your YAML is valid, a formatted preview appears on the right with a green confirmation.
  5. Use the Copy button to copy the cleaned YAML, or Download to save it as a .yaml file.

Why Use Flipper File to Validate YAML?

  • Instant feedback as you type — no submit button needed; errors surface in real time.
  • Exact error location — see the line number and character position, not just "invalid YAML."
  • Plain-English error messages — no cryptic parser jargon; we translate errors into clear explanations.
  • Formatted preview — valid YAML is displayed with proper indentation so you can confirm the structure looks right.
  • Runs entirely in your browser — your config files never leave your machine.
  • Works with any YAML — Docker Compose, Kubernetes manifests, GitHub Actions, Ansible playbooks, Hugo config, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is YAML validation?

YAML validation checks that your YAML text follows the correct syntax rules — proper indentation, valid key-value pairs, correctly quoted strings, and well-formed lists. A validator catches the errors that would cause a parser or config loader to reject your file.

Why does YAML fail to parse even when it looks right?

YAML is whitespace-sensitive. The most common culprits are: mixing tabs and spaces (YAML only allows spaces), incorrect indentation depth, a missing colon after a key, or unquoted strings containing special characters like :, #, or {. Our validator catches all of these.

What's the difference between YAML validation and YAML linting?

Validation checks whether the YAML is syntactically correct (will it parse?). Linting goes further and checks style conventions (are you consistent? are keys sorted? are strings unnecessarily quoted?). This tool focuses on validation — it tells you whether your YAML is valid and where the error is.

Does this tool support YAML 1.1 and YAML 1.2?

Yes. The underlying parser (js-yaml) follows the YAML 1.2 specification, which is the current standard. Most files written for YAML 1.1 (including Kubernetes and Docker configs) are fully compatible.

Can I validate large YAML files?

Yes. There's no file size limit. Paste as much YAML as you need, or upload a .yaml / .yml file directly. The validator handles multi-document YAML files (files using --- separators) as well.

Is my YAML sent to a server?

No. All validation happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your YAML — which often contains credentials, API keys, and internal config — never leaves your device.

What types of YAML files can I validate here?

Any YAML file: Docker Compose (docker-compose.yml), Kubernetes manifests, GitHub Actions workflows, Ansible playbooks, CircleCI config, Hugo site config, Helm charts, .prettierrc, .eslintrc, and more.

What if my YAML uses anchors and aliases?

YAML anchors (&anchor) and aliases (*anchor) are fully supported. The validator will resolve them and display the merged output in the preview pane.
