Conversion Options

Control YAML parsing and output formatting without changing your source file.

Core is the best default for modern YAML. YAML 1.1 can produce types that JSON cannot represent cleanly.

Your YAML and JSON content is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to Flipper File. The YAML parser code is loaded from a CDN on first use; your document content is not sent with that request.

Free YAML to JSON Converter Online

Convert YAML configuration data into JSON, or turn JSON back into readable YAML, without uploading the data to a server. The converter supports pasted text and .yaml, .yml, and .json files.

YAML to JSON and JSON to YAML

YAML and JSON represent many of the same basic data structures: objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and null values. YAML is often used for configuration files because it is concise and human-readable, while JSON is common in APIs, web applications, and data exchange. This tool lets you move between the two formats while keeping the underlying data structure intact whenever the selected YAML schema maps cleanly to JSON.

How Auto-Detect Works

In Auto mode, the converter checks for valid JSON first because JSON syntax is also valid YAML. If the input is not valid JSON, it is parsed as YAML. You can also force YAML → JSON or JSON → YAML from the Conversion menu when you already know the source format.

How to Convert YAML to JSON

  1. Paste YAML into the input box or upload a .yaml or .yml file.
  2. Leave Conversion set to Auto-detect or choose YAML → JSON.
  3. Choose the YAML schema and JSON indentation you want.
  4. Click Convert, then copy or download the JSON result.

  2. Leave Conversion set to Auto-detect or choose JSON → YAML.
  3. Choose YAML indentation, line width, and optional key sorting.
  4. Click Convert, then copy or download the YAML result.
About YAML-specific data types

Modern YAML 1.2 Core maps well to ordinary JSON data. Legacy YAML 1.1 can include values such as timestamps, binary data, sets, and other tagged types that do not have a direct JSON equivalent. If a value cannot be represented safely as JSON, this converter reports the issue instead of silently changing the data.

Private, Browser-Based Conversion

The source text stays in your browser during conversion. That makes the tool useful for configuration files, API examples, application settings, and other structured data you do not want uploaded to a conversion service.

Our Full Dev Tool Library

What is this tool used for?

This converter lets you instantly switch between YAML and JSON formats. Developers often need to convert configuration files, API payloads, or data structures depending on the system they are working with.

How does the auto-detect feature work?

When you paste or upload content, the converter automatically checks whether it’s valid JSON or YAML. It then switches the direction for you (JSON → YAML or YAML → JSON) and updates the labels to avoid confusion.

Is the conversion accurate?

Yes — the tool uses the open-source js-yaml library for YAML parsing and the built-in JavaScript JSON engine for JSON. As long as your input is valid, the output will be accurate and properly formatted.

Can I edit the output?

The output panel is read-only by default to prevent accidental edits. If you need to modify the converted data, copy it and paste it into the input side, then reconvert.

What happens if my YAML or JSON is invalid?

If the parser encounters an error, the tool will show an error message in the status bar. Make sure your YAML is properly indented and your JSON is properly bracketed.

Can I upload files?

Yes. Use the “Upload File” button in the toolbar to load a .yaml, .yml, or .json file directly into the input panel. The tool will auto-detect the format and convert it for you.

Is my data secure?

All conversion is done locally in your browser using JavaScript. No YAML or JSON data is sent to a server, so your files remain private and secure.
