Frequently Asked Questions

What is an XML formatter?

An XML formatter (also called an XML beautifier or pretty printer) takes compressed or poorly indented XML and rewrites it with consistent line breaks and indentation, making it human-readable without changing any of the underlying data.

Is this the same as the XML Minifier?

They're opposites. The XML Minifier removes all whitespace to produce the smallest possible XML string (ideal for production/APIs). This formatter does the reverse — it adds whitespace back so you can read and edit the XML easily.

Does formatting change my XML data?

No. Formatting only adds or adjusts whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines) between tags and values. The actual data, attributes, and structure remain identical.

What file size can I format?

There's no hard limit. Because everything runs in your browser, very large files (10MB+) may take a moment but will still process correctly.

Can it detect errors in my XML?

Yes. The tool uses the browser's native XML parser. If your XML has a syntax error — a missing closing tag, illegal character, or attribute without quotes — it will display the error message so you can fix it.

What indent size should I use?

Two spaces is most common in modern codebases and configuration files. Four spaces is traditional. Tabs are preferred in some style guides. All three produce valid, identical XML — it's a personal or team preference.

Can I format XML with namespaces or CDATA sections?

Yes. The formatter handles standard XML features including namespaces (xmlns:), CDATA sections (<![CDATA[...]]>), processing instructions, and XML comments.

Is this tool free?

Yes, completely free with no login, no watermarks, and no usage limits.
