Common uses include encoding text strings for Unix file permission scripts, converting character sequences for embedded systems or assembly programming, debugging octal escape sequences in source code, and verifying how specific Unicode characters map to their base-8 representations.

FAQ Section

  • What is octal, and why would I convert text to it? Octal is a base-8 number system that uses digits 0 through 7. In computing, every character has a numeric code point — for example, the letter H has the ASCII code 72, which is 110 in octal. Converting text to octal is common in Unix/Linux scripting, low-level programming, and anywhere that base-8 representation is expected instead of decimal or hexadecimal.
  • How do I convert text to octal? Make sure the Text → Octal direction is selected, paste or type your text into the input box, then click Convert. Each character in your text will be converted to its corresponding octal value, separated by whichever delimiter you've chosen.
  • How do I convert octal back to text? Switch to the Octal → Text direction using the toggle at the top. Paste your octal values into the input — OctalPress accepts values separated by spaces, commas, dashes, or newlines — and click Convert. Any valid octal values will be decoded back into readable text.
  • What separators does OctalPress support? You can output octal values separated by spaces, dashes, commas, or newlines, or with no separator at all. When converting octal back to text, OctalPress is flexible and will correctly parse input using any of those delimiters regardless of which separator option is currently selected.
  • What does "Pad to 3 digits" do? When enabled, every octal value is padded with leading zeros to ensure a consistent 3-digit width — so 40 becomes 040 and 12 becomes 012. This is useful when your downstream system expects fixed-width octal values, or simply for easier visual scanning of the output.
  • What does the 0o prefix option do? Enabling this prepends 0o to each octal value (e.g. 0o110), which is the standard notation for octal literals in many programming languages including Python, JavaScript, and C. Turn it on if you're copying the output directly into code.
  • Does it support Unicode characters beyond basic ASCII? Yes. OctalPress uses JavaScript's Unicode code points, so characters outside the basic ASCII range — including accented letters, emoji, and characters from non-Latin scripts — are all converted correctly to their full octal representations.
  • Does the tool send my text to a server? No. All conversion happens locally in your browser. Your input never leaves your device, which makes it safe to use with source code, configuration files, or any other sensitive content.
  • What file types can I upload? OctalPress accepts .txt and .docx files via the upload buttons or by dragging and dropping directly onto the input area. Output can be copied to your clipboard or downloaded as a .txt file.
  • Is OctalPress free?Yes, completely free with no account or sign-up required.
