Frequently Asked Questions

What is an INI file?

An INI file is a simple text-based configuration file used by many Windows applications, games, and system tools. It is organized into sections (denoted by [SectionName]) containing key-value pairs like key=value. The format dates back to early versions of Windows and remains widely used today.

What does the XML output look like?

Each INI section becomes an XML element, and each key-value pair becomes a child element within that section. For example, a [Database] section with host=localhost becomes <Database><host>localhost</host></Database> nested under a root <config> element (or whatever root name you choose).

What happens to keys that aren't in any section?

INI files sometimes contain key-value pairs before the first section header. These are placed under a <globals> element (or similar) in the XML output so no data is lost.

Are comments in my INI file preserved?

INI comments (lines starting with ; or #) are not carried over to XML output, as XML and INI comment conventions differ significantly. The data values are preserved completely.

Can I convert large INI files?

Yes. Since all processing happens in your browser, there is no server-side file size restriction. Very large files may take a moment to process depending on your device's speed, but they are fully supported.

What XML encoding is used?

The output XML uses UTF-8 encoding with a standard XML declaration (<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>) at the top.

Can I change the root element name?

Yes — the tool lets you set a custom root element name before converting. The default is config but you can change it to anything valid like settings, properties, or your application name.

Is this tool free?

Completely free, with no limits and no login required.
